Ben has a passion for creating authentic and flexible learning environments to facilitate student learning through a \u2018learning by doing\u2019 philosophy. and<\/li><li>Concentric tube heat exchanger (visualisation of the flow and temperature distributions)<\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a20d631 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"a20d631\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"616\" height=\"159\" src=\"https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture2.png\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-1403\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture2.png 616w, https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture2-300x77.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-31471d2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"31471d2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Figure 1: Laboratory experiments incorporated into AR study<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c991a93 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"c991a93\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b5dbcb9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b5dbcb9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>In what ways do you anticipate AR will help when teaching engineering?<\/strong><\/p><p>The early feedback we\u2019ve received from students so far seems to suggest, that an interactive AR tool which visually enhances the overall laboratory experience, could play a key scaffolding role to help a student understand complex physics.<br \/>More generally, I see AR will play a useful role in:<\/p><ul><li>Improving engagement in laboratories, and as a natural \u2018conversation starter\u2019;<\/li><li>Overcoming language\/communication barriers for complex theoretical concepts, especially for students who identify as visual learners;<\/li><li>Encouraging long-term memory retention of core engineering concepts which help develop a student\u2019s \u201cengineering intuition\u201d.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong><br \/>What makes your study unique?<\/strong><\/p><p>Previous studies have mostly focused on a single \u2018standalone\u2019 experience, and they only report the results of experience surveys completed by the participants immediately after the lesson without any longer-term follow ups to gauge knowledge retention. We\u2019ve seen that the results reported are almost always positive, but we want to separate the student\u2019s increased levels of engagement from the \u2018WOW\u2019 factor (which we expect) from an improvement in understanding and knowledge retention. Additionally, we aim to assess whether AR experiences can naturally fit with other educational delivery methods (lecturing, laboratories, discussion groups etc.).<\/p><p>Our study is focused on AR experiences that have been embedded in the standard engineering curriculum (i.e., they will be used regularly in the year 1 teaching laboratories for mechanical engineering). The quizzes are developed to assess the benefits of incorporating AR technology from a pedagogical point of view.<\/p><p><strong>How are the student surveys being conducted?<\/strong><\/p><p>Students are first asked to fill out a preliminary survey to gathers demographic information.<\/p><p>Students are broken into a control group (who conduct the laboratory without access to the AR) and a test group who actively use the AR experience within the laboratory.<\/p><p>Immediately after the laboratory, students are required to do a:<\/p><ul><li>Physics quiz \u2013 testing the student\u2019s understanding of the physics involved in the laboratory.<\/li><li>AR experience survey (only taken by the test group).<\/li><\/ul><p>A follow-up quiz is also conducted three months later to assess the student\u2019s memory retention of the topics studied in each laboratory.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f4520d9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"f4520d9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"609\" height=\"526\" src=\"https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture3.png\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-1404\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture3.png 609w, https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Picture3-300x259.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 609px) 100vw, 609px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8dbd18e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8dbd18e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Figure 2: Examples of AR experiences on laboratory equipment<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e56f07f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e56f07f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>What hardware is being used for the AR?<\/strong><\/p><p>iPad Pros are the preferred option to deliver the AR experiences for our study. The experiences were also developed for the Microsoft Hololens using Vuforia Studio, but in these cases the more immersive experience afforded by the Hololens did not seem to add to the experience for the learner.<\/p><p><strong>Is commercial software required to view and create the experiences?<\/strong><\/p><p>The AR experiences can be viewed in a free app called Vuforia View; however, a license of Vuforia Studio was required to develop &amp; host the experiences in the cloud.<\/p><p>The content for each experience was created in commercial software (ANSYS simulations and Vuforia Studio for AR authoring\/hosting) because we wanted the experiences to be at the highest quality (both in terms of accuracy of simulated results and the AR user experience).<\/p><p><strong>Do you have any plans for further study with AR after this trial is finished?<\/strong><\/p><p>Yes, we plan to create more experiences and implement these into our engineering curriculum at NTU \u2013 particularly with a focus on complex engineering concepts found in fluid mechanics and solid mechanics.
