{"id":1610,"date":"2013-11-29T17:12:22","date_gmt":"2013-11-29T06:12:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.computationalfluiddynamics.com.au\/?p=1610"},"modified":"2025-08-14T14:34:30","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T03:34:30","slug":"ansys-cfd-helps-winners-f1-in-schools-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/blog\/cfd\/ansys-cfd-helps-winners-f1-in-schools-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"Astute use of ANSYS CFD contributes to the success of Australian teams at F1 in Schools 2013 World Finals"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><p>LEAP is very proud to congratulate the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.f1inschools.com\/latest-news\/a1-racing-from-australia-lifts-the-bernie-ecclestone-f1-in-schools-world-champions-trophy-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">students from A1 Racing for winning the F1 in Schools 2013 World Finals in Austin, Texas<\/a>.\u00a0 A1 Racing are a collaboration team between Pine Rivers in Brisbane, QLD, and Phoenix P-12 in Ballarat, Vic, who have continued the proud tradition of Australian students excelling at this international event by becoming the third successive Australian-based team to win the World Finals (with previous winners hailing from Tasmania and South Australia).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/F1winners.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1618\" src=\"https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/F1winners-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"F1winners\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computationalfluiddynamics.com.au\/f1-in-schools-2013-world-finals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">our last post<\/a>, we mentioned that the\u00a0use of CFD for\u00a0aerodynamic design and stability at A1 Racing had already brought some early success, with their team having won the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.f1inschools.com\/latest-news\/aussies-top-the-timesheets-with-fastest-car-at-f1-in-schools-world-finals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fastest car competition by leading the timetrial event<\/a>.\u00a0 Later that evening, it was announced that A1 Racing was also the overall winner of F1 in Schools 2013 World Finals.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s go into some more detail on how LEAP\u2019s CFD simulations may have assisted A1 Racing to design the fastest car at the F1 in Schools competition.<\/p>\n<p>To begin with, a detailed steady-state analysis was performed in order to evaluate the cars aerodynamic performance in terms of lift, downforce and pitching moment. \u00a0By nondimensionalising the lift, downforce and pitching moment, the aerodynamic performance at any speed could be calculated and used to rank the different conceptual designs.<\/p>\n<p>It was shown that the most critical factors in obtaining accurate results in these initial studies was in creating a high-fidelity<strong> boundary layer mesh<\/strong> for the entire car, and also applying the advanced<strong> turbulence modelling<\/strong> capabilities of ANSYS to accurately predict regions of flow separation and the formation of vortices in the wake.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1591\" src=\"https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/F1-in-Schools_A1-aero-300x136.png\" alt=\"F1-in-Schools_A1-aero\" width=\"300\" height=\"136\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, in order to most accurately reproduce the race conditions for the track, more realistic boundary conditions were applied such as:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; a <strong>moving ground<\/strong> plane<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>rotating wheels<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; inclusion of <strong>exhaust gases from the CO<sub>2<\/sub> canister<\/strong> that provides thrust to the car (It was found that in preliminary tests that this stream of high-velocity gas had a large influence on the wake profile, and therefore needed to be included to accurately predict the drag force acting on each car design).<\/p>\n<p>In addition to these \u201cstraight-line\u201d CFD simulations, the cars were also simulated in a number of different orientations to evaluate the static stability of the car. The car was simulated for both zero angle, small angle and large angle perturbations of pitch and sideslip..<\/p>\n<p>These combinations of different pitch and sideslip perturbations gave the designers a total of nine unique design points which were automatically run in a parametric study of the car\u2019s stability using ANSYS DesignXplorer.
