Launching Scientific Payloads as high as 30,000ft, the team competes in the Australian Universities Rocket Competition, and were on track last year to travel to New Mexico to compete in the world\u2019s largest intercollegiate rocketry competition \u2013 the Spaceport America cup. As with many pursuits in 2020, the competition was cancelled, but took place in 2021 as a virtual event.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-10828b2 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"10828b2\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8303b6a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8303b6a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>With a heavy emphasis on Analysis and technical reporting, the competition presented as more of a conference on aerospace engineering \u2013 a great opportunity to connect with like minded students from around the world, and to share the work of Monash HPR with representatives from America\u2019s thriving space industry. Of 75 teams, 25 were selected to present specialised podium sessions on various topics \u2013 including \u201cTeam 55 \u2013 Monash HPR\u201d.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2799e44 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2799e44\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public-leapaust.s3.ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com\/resources\/Picture2.gif\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0a9bd49 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0a9bd49\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>With a presentation entitled \u201cDetailed and Extensive Trajectory and Sensitivity Analysis through Monte Carlo Simulations\u201d, the HPR dynamics team showcased\u00a0<em>SATURN<\/em>, their custom 6 degrees of freedom simulator. Taking inputs from ANSYS Fluent CFD runs,\u00a0<em>SATURN<\/em>\u00a0simulates the trajectory of HPR rockets, and is a useful design tool.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dffcafe e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"dffcafe\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9785256 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"9785256\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-af42863 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"af42863\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1536\" height=\"1536\" src=\"https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/1624262980492-1.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-5699\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/1624262980492-1.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/1624262980492-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/1624262980492-1-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/1624262980492-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/1624262980492-1-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1536px) 100vw, 1536px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f5488b7 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"f5488b7\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42c82e1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"42c82e1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Thanks to\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LEAP Australia<\/a><\/span>, the entire lifecycle of a rocket, from design to launch is easily managed.\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/ptc-creo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Parts are created by design engineers in CREO Parametric<\/a><\/span>, then pre-processed for CFD by the dynamics team.\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leapaust.com.au\/ptc-windchill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Using Windchill PLM software allows any member of the team to easily access parts, whilst ensuring strong version control<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u2013 this has been critical through the enforced isolation of the pandemic. CFD on parts is completed in ANSYS Fluent, including thorough mesh convergence studies. SATURN uses outputs from Fluent such as aerodynamic drag to inform operational decisions up until and after the launch of the rocket.<\/p><p>Whilst yet to launch, Monash HPR\u2019s rocket\u00a0<em>Icarus\u00a0<\/em>achieved second place in its category at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spaceportamericacup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2021 Virtual Spaceport America Cup<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 coming within 2 points (out of a possible 1000) of winning the category &#8211; a feat the team is incredibly proud of. Of even greater note was the acknowledgement of the quality of the simulation work done by the team, with Monash HPR achieving first place in the Charles Hoult Award for Modelling and Simulation (to add to winning the Shoal Simulation and Modelling Award at AURC 2020). To accurately hit the 10,000 ft target altitude accurately, <em>Icarus <\/em>will deploy drag inducing flaps into the oncoming airflow. Extensive CFD runs calculate the drag for various flight conditions and airbrake angles, the outputs of which go to a lookup table that guides the angle of the airbrakes throughout their operating regime. Project Manager James MacKinnon said \u201cthe novel air brake system has presented itself as a complex challenge to simulate both aerodynamically and mechanically.
