Conveyors

Design & simulation solutions for conveyors.

Designers of conveyor systems face a variety of challenges that can impact the efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness of their designs. Understanding the specific needs of the materials to be conveyed (e.g., weight, size, shape, and fragility) is crucial, and accessibility, energy efficiency and regulatory compliance must all be considered during the design process. Simulation helps engineers address these issues by helping to identify problem areas early in the design cycle, reducing the need for prototyping and physical testing.

Balancing Material Load

Unbalanced material loads can result in accelerated wear in high abrasive loading spots and cause belt tracking issues when material is not evenly loaded. Prolonged unbalanced loading can also result in high energy consumption and result in early component failure.

Elevated Belt Wear Graph - Conveyor design

Ansys Rocky is used to model how particles behave during loading and transport, providing a quantitative representation of belt loading. Different materials and properties can be tested to ensure that variations are accounted for in the field. Simulation provides early identification of problem areas and opportunities for flow improvement, resulting in reduced costs as potential issues are picked up before manufacture.

Handling Peak Loads and Flow Variations

Unexpected operating conditions such as material variations and operator error can result in risks such as spillage, blocking and excess energy consumption.

Ansys Rocky can simulate a wide range of flows with various particle shapes including ‘sticky’ materials, providing engineers with design flexibility without the need for physical prototypes.

Expected Service Life

In-field loading that is much harsher than anticipated will reduce service life and lead to unexpected breakdowns, which can cause project delays and cost increases.

Ansys Rocky provides quantitative data on all bulk material handling properties, enabling a wide scope of scenarios to be captured pre manufacture and provide accurate maintenance planning. Rocky can also be used post manufacture to fine-tune service intervals based on updated in-field data.
